Ministry To Help Elis Reunite With Son - Shahrizat
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The Woman, Family and Community Development Ministry, through the Attorney-General's Chambers, will assist Elis Syuhaila Mokhtar, 34, reunite with son, Ferris Mokhtar Van De Ven, 5, who was taken to Belgium by her former husband.
Its minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had promised to help solve the issue.
"This issue involves the laws of two countries. Although there was an order from the Syariah High Court (giving custody to Elis Syuhaila), the child has been taken away.
"I've asked the Attorney-General to help Elis Syuhaila so that the son can be returned in accordance with the order issued by the Syariah High Court and I promise to check on this case from time to tome," she told reporters at the Kepong Wanita Umno Aidiladha celebration here Saturday.
The Syariah High Court had on Nov 10 given Elis Syuhaila a full custody of the boy.
Elis Syuhaila's former husband, who is the boy's father, Frank Theodorus Van De Ven @ Firdaus, 40, took Ferris Mokhtar to Belgium through Rantau Panjang, Kelantan on March 5.
On Sept 8, Van De Ven contacted the Umno Youth community complaints bureau in Kuala Lumpur to say that Ferris was with him in Belgium and that he would not hand him over.
Shahrizat urged Elis to appoint a lawyer as advised by the Foreign Ministry to challenge Van De Ven's action in the Belgian court.
"The action by Frank Theodorus Van De Ven @ Firdaus tantamounts to abduction, a challenge to our laws and an insult to the Syariah laws of Malaysia."
She said her ministry would cooperate with the Attorney-General's Chambers, Foreign Ministry and the Home Ministry to seek justice in the case.
